DStv Mobile has been tasked with the flagship challenge of taking Africa into the innovative and exciting realm of mobile television. With a focus on cellphone technology, DStv Mobile aggregates and produces mobile TV content and services for a number of mobile platforms and technologies.
Mobile television is accessible via 3G streaming (3G) and Digital Video Broadcast Handheld Technology (DVB-H).
The significant difference between DVB-H and 3G is DVB-H is a type of broadcast technology that utilises its own network of transmitters. In other words it does not use the same network as that used by cellphones nor the DStv service that beams programming to household televisions. 3G utilises the same infrastructure as that used by cellphones, it is dependent on the Mobile Network Operators network.
The first commercial product to be launched by DStv Mobile was in July 2010. This enabled subscribers to access DStv channels through streaming on a mobile operator’s network.
Recently, DStv Mobile launched broadcast television through DVB-H technology, making DStv Mobile accessible to a wider audience.
DStv Mobile is working to integrate a range of valuable products and services into the mobile TV environment. These interactive options could include real time voting and blogging views about content and social community sites.
